My First Horse, Maggie
by Colleen, age 15

Last year, I was thrown into one of my wildest dreams. Last year, I had the chance to own a horse for four months, and I was excited beyond all belief. Though she wasn't the youngest or the healthiest mare, Maggie was quite pretty, and she had speed on her side.

At 20 years old, Maggie had been around the block more than a few times, and there was little that seemed to upset her. She would leap forward into a canter if I asked it of her, and once her qhite body had begun to bulge with packs of trembling muscles, I decided to begin gymkhana training with her.

That old mare seemed to lose age with every extended step she took. She threw her heart into every stride, and rounded barrel turns with ease. Sure, she was well-aged, but months of training had made her fit and healthy. Her once bony chest was now crammed with rippling muscles, and most people laughed if I ever told them her age.

On one of our shows of the season, Maggie pulled a muscle in her back leg. Despite my fears over causing further injury to her leg, my friends and trainers encouraged me to run her gently in our barrel race.

I knotted my reins, leaned over her neck, and gave her a great kick. She bounded forward as if to say, "Let's go, Colleen..." and she rounded the first turn with ease. I did not push her to gallop until we rounded the third turn and came face to face with the home stretch.

Shouting at her in the midst of my adrenalin rush, I felt the old mare take off down the arena. I gently tried to slow her a bit, not wanting to strain her leg any further, but she pulled at the bit, tossing her head as much to say, "Let me handle this!" and I simply let her fly. We didn't take first place, and we didn't take last place, but I ended up with something at the end of the day. I realized that Maggie had pushed aside her pain....for me. She could have refused to run that day, but she valued our friendship enough to push her limits on that cool September afternoon.

I will never forget that old mare, and how she gave me my first set of wings...
