One day, my dad was gone, and when he came driving back, a truck and a trailer followed him. They pulled up the hill to our house and stopped on the gravel in the driveway. My dad got out and said to us, "Step back". My sister and I were both standing there and took a step back, staring at that old metal trailer in awe.

A shill whinny came from the trailer, and I remember it being so big-- probably because I was so small. Bang, bang, bang came the hoofbeats against the metal trailer...and out popped a beautiful pinto pony!

"Her name is Contessa, or Tessa for short". She was the prettiest pony, brown and white pinto with appy spots on her rump.

Over the next few weeks my parents noticed that she was very fat. They said thought maybe she was pregnant, but their old owners assured us that she couldn't be. "That pony sure looks pregnant!" my dad said. So they called a vet. I dont' remember much, other than the vet in his white coat was looking at our Tessa. He told us she needed to be dewormed, that was why she was so fat.

So he dewormed her and we put her down in the barn. About two days later, my sister and I were in the back of our little pickup truck driving down to our barn with my oldest sister driving. She got out and yelled something from in the barn. "What?" I said. It sounded like she said Daisy had a baby-- Daisy was our pet sheep.
I got out of the truck and came running to the barn. There was a tiny black foal standing beside Tessa! Tessa had a baby in her stall that night!

I was so excited, I went running up to the house. My parents say I burst into their room and said, "Tessa had a baby! A black one!".

That baby we called Chocolate Surprise, or Cocoa for short. Cocoa became Caterina's pony. Tessa and Cocoa were our slightly naughty but fun riding ponies for many years. I fell off Tessa many times, and Caterina was occaisinonally bucked off of Cocoa-- but we learned to ride and had fun.

When we got too big to ride them, we found another little girl and her brother who badly wanted a pony-- and our ponies moved on to make the dreams of two more kids come true!
