What
Are Horse Feathers?
A horse's "feathers" are the longer hairs that grow on the leg on the fetlock joint. =
Some breeds-- especially draft horses-- are bred to have feathers. Most people just leave the fetlocks as they are-- some feel it helps protect the fetlock when riding or competing. But light breeds are often clipped in shows for a clean look. Left natural, the feathers serve to protect the lower leg from flies. However, in muddy conditions, they can get clumped with dirt. In the middle of the fetlock, there's a bump of hard skin called the Ergot. In language, the term "horsefeathers" is used to mean something is nonsense... perhaps because the idea of a horse having feathers is silly (although horses DO have feathers, just not like birds!).
